How to YOLO Wisely: How This Book Changed My Sister’s Life

Imagine a book that can change your life by giving you the tools to make better financial decisions. A book that is not just about how to get rich, but also how to live well with what you have. This is HOW TO YOLO WISELY. It’s an empowering and engaging collection of financial insight and wisdom for those who want more out of life than just money. I encouraged my sister to read HOW TO YOLO WISELY when she was in need of some serious guidance on her finances, and it changed her perspective completely. How to YOLO Wisely Book Review

What would you do if money isn’t an issue? When I came across a finance advocate named Nikki Jurado, also known as Nomad Finance Girl or NFG, I repeatedly asked myself this question. She usually asks questions that will make you reflect and rethink your life on a deeper level.

NFG is one of the influencers that I closely follow. NFG is a multi-preneur, a financial coach, a trader, and a writer from Rizal, Philippines, who has more than 100,000 readers online. All of her content which you can find on her FB page and website, are well-thought-out and insightful.

Yet the thing I love the most about her is her authenticity and humility. Because in spite of all her achievements at such a young age, she’s not afraid of showing her vulnerability. She’s not afraid to share her failures and mistakes so other people can learn from them. I haven’t met her personally but I can tell how authentic, raw, and genuine she is as a person.

How to YOLO Wisely Book Review

When NFG released her first book, How to YOLO Wisely, I’m one of her raving fans who quickly went to get a copy. And it didn’t disappoint. In the book, NFG mainly talks about how you can set your financial foundation, manage your income, and build your legacy.

But this is more than just a financial or self-help book. More than anything else, it helps you let go of unhelpful beliefs around money. It gives you a fresh perspective on how possible it is to ensure your future financial security while enjoying the present — all at the same time.

NFG’s HTYW book is full of fun, witty, and inspiring stories, great illustrations, and engaging quizzes. I fell in love with the book so much that I ordered more and gave it to my friends who might need it. When my sister had a huge financial roadblock months ago, I also encouraged her to read the book. And I’ve never seen such progress in my sister’s financial life. In fact, she loved the book so much that she immediately started implementing these financial insights and acting with greater intentionality and mindfulness to keep her finances on track.

How The Book Changed My Sister’s Life

My one and only sister, who is two years older than me, is such a hardworking person. But unlike me, she’s more like the happy-go-lucky type. I’ve seen her land jobs and freelance gigs but most of them didn’t last long. She also jumps from one job or idea to another as soon as she sees something out there is more enticing. I admit we’re somehow similar in this aspect. She also has the “Shiny Object Syndrome” but I think hers is on a higher level than mine.

My sister is actually a very talented and creative person but the only thing that keeps her from experiencing huge breakthroughs, or at least financial stability, is her inability to persist. She tends to give up easily. She’s usually eager to start on projects but mostly fails at getting them done. It’s clear to me how she needs help in building strong willpower.

For years, I have already tried a lot of things to help her, but she always falls back to square one. And when she lost her work-at-home job a few months ago, I admit I’m already at my peak. In spite of the significant amount she made, she has no savings nor emergency funds. I know I’ll be back at being her emergency fund just as how it has been for the past years. She already has a family of her own which puts more pressure on her finances. This is especially true now that finding a job is so difficult.

As a sibling, she will always have my back no matter what but it can’t just go on like this. Eventually, I will have a family of my own so she needs to learn how to stand up not just for herself but for her own family.

She’s about to look for another work-at-home job when I encouraged her to read the “How to YOLO Wisely” book instead. We had a heart-to-heart talk and made an agreement that I’ll cover up all her household expenses at the moment as long as she finishes the book. And she did. And I was really amazed at how much the book had changed her.

I have never seen her so inspired and more responsible than before. I saw a 360-degree shift in her mindset about money and life. Right after finishing the book, we talked and she gave me a proposal that she’ll open a brewed coffee business. It has always been her dream. I supported it and lend her initial capital. So far, her business is going well.

Now, she also takes time to plan, save, and prioritize her finances while also dreaming of a prosperous future for herself and her family. In a short period of time, she was also able to put up her own website, solelycoffee.com (still in progress).

I also taught her more about copywriting, content writing, SEO, and website building — things that she’s never really interested in before. I’m very happy and proud of how she’s doing now and how her business is growing. And I’m just grateful for how the book played a huge part in her transformation.

Final Thoughts

Jim Rohn once said that books could help you gain years of experience, even centuries of knowledge, in just a span of hours or days. Just imagine the years of real-life experiences it takes for an author to write one book. Essentially, you’ll be able to gain knowledge from what’s worked for people who have been in your shoes. With books, you get to tap into the success of those who came before you.

She's also a sucker for memes and thinks she’s the funniest person in the world (even though she knows that’s not true). Her favorite drink is Kopiko Brown coffee, but she'll also take tea or beer if it's offered.

I can understand how you feel when you know someone close to you does not know how to handle finances. That’s the same way I felt with my cousins who would spend money like its their last day on earth. Good thing my siblings are more cautious with money or I’d have a big problem in my hands.

Indeed Ms Joji. Although one of my biggest problems is being too generous when it comes to letting people borrow money. I don’t accept any interest coz I don’t want to add up any burden but most of the time, this act of kindness is abused. There are times when I’m not paid :’>>

Maam Shiela , I think Me and your sister has common character . I am also eager to start on projects but mostly fails at getting them done. Lol! But great to know that she applied the YOLO book and have a Soley Coffee business. I want to read that book too. I hope I can have that one

If you can inform more young people and young-at-heart- folks to learn and understand financial planning, much much better. I’ve regretted not starting young with planning about my finances. A lot of wasted opportunities but it’s not too late to learn and implement what you’ve learned.

    • Sheila

Indeed Ms Marg., it’s never too late for everything. It’s a never-ending learning process. And tbh, even if I talk more about finance stuff, I know there’s so much more to learn and implement.

      Hi Charen!

Yes, it’s currently sold physically. I think there’s no audiobook version for it yet. But months before the book was released, there’s a free ebook that you can download. (I read both and found that there are major revisions/improvements in the physical book.) And btw, I think NFG is also releasing an online course soon and it’s highly tied with the learnings in the book.

I am definitely adding this book to my reading list. Thank you for sharing, Sheila. Books are reliable mentors, guru, and guide. I am happy for you and for your sister, She. I wish her success in her new business endeavor, too. I am not a coffee person but I will definitely tell my coffee lover friends to try Solely Coffee. 🙂

I love the title and I think the author is also very credible when it comes to the topic. Great book indeed but there’s always a part who says make your own mistakes and learn from it coz you only live once. hahahah

I got intrigued with this line – “I have never seen her so inspired and more responsible than before. I saw a 360-degree shift in her mindset about money and life.” Once I can find a physical book. I’ll grab this one.
